Responsibilities Of Women

The great thing about being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is that we get taught, not only through scripture, but through our Latter-day prophets. Many of their teachings have been a saving grace for myself and thus I would like to share some of those teaching with you.

One of those teachings that I would like to share, is in connection with the responsibilities women have within this day and age.

The first thing most people have a concern with is how woman are seen in a marriage. Some people see women as inferior to men, they see women as being subordinate. This is the one thing they need to realise, is that the place of a woman is to walk beside the man, not in front of him nor behind him. There is full equality between man and woman, and the gospel of Jesus Christ was devised for men and women alike. [Extracted from writings by Elder John A. Widtsoe]

However, the roles and assignments between men and women differ. These are eternal differences - with women being given many tremendous responsibilities of motherhood and sisterhood and men being given the tremendous responsibilities of fatherhood and the priesthood - but the man is not without the woman nor the woman without the man in the Lord. (1 Cor. 11:11)[Extracted from Teachings of the Presidents of the Church - Spencer W. Kimball]

To be a righteous woman is a glorious thing in any age. The woman was placed on this earth to enrich, to protect, and to guard the home from evil - which is society's basic and most noble institution. In a society which is falling apart through wickedness and corruption, the righteous woman can help to save the home, which may be the last and only place family can go to feel safe and be protected from harm.

Mothers have a sacred role. They are partners with God, as well as with their own husbands, first in giving birth to the Lord's children and then in rearing those children so they will serve the Lord and keep His commandments. Motherhood is a holy calling, a sacred dedication for carrying out the Lord's work, a consecration and devotion to the rearing and fostering, the nurturing of body, mind, and spirit of God's children. [Extracted from Teachings of the Presidents of the Church - Spencer W. Kimball]

Elder Spencer W. Kimball said that too many women spend their time in socializing, in politicking, in public services when they should be home to teach and train and receive and love their children into security...

No greater honor could be given to a woman than to assist in [God's] divine plan. I wish to say without equivocation that a woman will find no greater satisfaction and joy and peace and make no greater contribution to mankind than in being a wise and worthy woman and raising good children.

Some of you have lost your husbands through death, others through divorce. Some of you have not yet had the great privilege of marriage. But, on the scale of eternity, the missing of these blessings "shall be but a small moment"(Doctrine and Covenants 121:7)

Remember, too, as we focus on the glories and importance of family life here, that all of us belong to the eternal family of our Father in Heaven.

Be assured, too, that all faithful sisters, who, through no fault of their own, do not have the privilege during this life on earth to get married for eternity or have children, will have that blessing in eternity. On occasions when you ache for that acceptance and affection which belong to family life on earth, please know that our Father in Heaven is aware of your anguish, and that one day he will bless you beyond your capacity to express.[Extracted from Teachings of the Presidents of the Church - Spencer W. Kimball]

Elder Spencer W. Kimball said:"Every girl, and I say every girl, should prepare herself for marriage and for domestic responsibilities. You are not reading that in magazines today, but it's true nevertheless. She should be encouraged to be proud to prepare for true womanly service. She should become skilled in things that are useful and enriching to her family life. She should develop her talents, strengthen her knowledge and testimony of the gospel, and be eager to serve others. We want our women to be well educated, for children may not recover from the ignorance of their mothers. You will be better mothers and wives, if you sharpen the skills you have been given and use the talents with which God has blessed you.

I stress again the deep need each woman has to study the scriptures. As you become more and more familiar with the truths of the scriptures, you will be more and more effective in keeping the second great commandment, to love your neighbor as yourself. Become scholars of the scriptures - not to put others down, but to lift them up!

The world need real women with good hearts and a willingness to serve, there are too many of those women who seek after their own lusts and selfishness. We need to prove to the world that true women are still out there, rearing their children in righteousness and serving others with selflessness.

Thank You for taking the time to read this post.
